Note: In addition to traditional cookies, we also use browser localStorage to store preferences and settings locally on your device. These function similarly to cookies but are stored differently. For simplicity, we refer to both as "cookies" on this page.
Definitions
- "Cookie" means a small text file, or a similar technology such as browser localStorage, placed on your device when you use our website.
- "First-party cookie" means a cookie set by Disco Chess. "Third-party cookie" means a cookie set by another organisation, such as Google, Mixpanel, Reddit, or Applixir (Reddit and Applixir on the website only).
- "Session cookie" is deleted when you close your browser. "Persistent cookie" remains until it expires or you delete it.

Essential Cookies
This storage is necessary for the basic functionality of the site, including keeping you signed in. Your Disco Chess session itself is kept in first-party browser storage by Firebase Authentication; the Google cookies listed below may additionally be set by Google when you sign in with a Google account.

Analytics (Cookieless & Optional)
We use analytics to understand how users interact with our site. Our analytics are privacy-focused: Google Analytics 4 runs in cookieless mode, and Mixpanel uses first-party browser storage with EU data residency.

What we track: Page views, puzzle solving activity (correct/incorrect, time taken, puzzle sets), feature usage (hearts, referrals, premium), and user engagement metrics. For signed-in users this data is tied to your account (user ID, email address, display name). Mixpanel data is stored in the EU; Google Analytics data may be processed outside the EU.
Session Replay: For signed-in users only, Mixpanel Session Replay records your interactions with the website (mouse movements, clicks, scrolls, form inputs excluding passwords, and visual page representation). This helps us identify usability issues and improve the user experience. Session recordings are stored for 30 days. Session Replay is not active for anonymous visitors.

Advertising Cookies (Optional)
This storage tracks your site activity to measure our advertising and may share data with the advertising partner. The Reddit Pixel loads by default on the website; you can block it with browser settings or an ad blocker, and opt out of Reddit advertising through your Reddit privacy settings. Applixir cookies are only set on the website, and only when you actively choose to watch a rewarded video ad. Neither the Reddit Pixel nor Applixir is present in the Disco Chess iOS and Android apps, which do not show advertisements.
